Gianni Colombo, born Giovanni Maria Colombo (Milan, 1 January 1937 – Melzo, 3 February 1993), was an Italian artist. Gianni Colombo was born in Milan on 1 January 1937. His father, Giuseppe Colombo, inherited an industrial trimmings company, transforming it into an electrical conductor factory and his mother, Tina Benevolo, played the piano, an instrument also studied by her son. Gianni is the younger brother of Joe Colombo, known for being one of the most creative and experimental designers of the sixties. Between 1956 and 1959 he studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and worked first in a studio with Davide Boriani and Gabrile De Vecchi and later in one adjacent to that of his brother Joe. He exhibited his ceramic works in various competitions and began to create abstract works. He experiments with different materials and languages, influenced by the lessons of Lucio Fontana, and creates multi-material works and monochrome reliefs in cotton wool.
