Vittorugo Contino Biography

Vittor Ugo Contino was born in Palermo in 1925. In 1935, he moved to Rome where he then attended courses in the optical section of camera operators at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia: it was 1950 and he already had a marriage with a son behind him. Starting in 1953 he began working as a chief cameraman on numerous documentaries (around 300 documentaries over the course of his career) for Italian and foreign productions and on many films. Contino then abandoned cinema to photographically follow the last years of the life of the poet Ezra Pound (who died in 1972). Two books will be born from this collaboration: “Spots and Dots. Ezra Pound in Italy” and “Pound. Flash back." Since the beginning of 1972 he has been a teacher of optics and photographic technique at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome; previously he had carried out an intense activity as a “Visitor Professor” in American colleges and universities on the Pacific coast. In the early 1970s he set up a photographic studio to create the covers of the weekly magazine L'Espresso, a job that continued until the early 1980s. The studio will then specialize in the design and creation of images for industrial needs.
