Alain Corneau Biography

Alain Corneau was born in Loiret in 1943 and studied at the Lycée Pothier in Orléans, where he had Pierre Vidal-Naquet as his history-geography teacher. After developing an interest in cinema thanks to his father, he decided to study cinema and was admitted to IDHEC. His career was characterized by the variety of genres he tackled, from detective stories to intimate psychology, and by the theme of confrontation and departure for a foreign country, giving way to a painful search for identity. His first film, a crime drama, was followed by two commercial successes before he directed Série noire, a psychological drama that left its mark on French cinema. Tous les matins du monde, based on a novel by Pascal Quignard, achieved unexpected success with the public and critics and won seven Césars in 1992, including best film and best director. In 2004, all of his cinematographic work was awarded the René-Clair Prize awarded by the Académie française. In 2010 he was awarded the Henri-Langlois Prize for the exemplary nature of his choices and for his film career. Grégory Marouzé dedicated the documentary Alain Corneau, du noir au bleu to him in 2006, which traces his career and addresses his founding themes.
