Camille Jean Baptiste Corot Biography

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796 - 1875) was a French painter, considered one of the most sensitive landscape painters of the nineteenth century.
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was a French painter, considered one of the greatest exponents of French realism. Born in Paris on 26 July 1796 to a bourgeois family of Swiss origin, Corot began working in the textile trade, but always had a passion for art. At 26, his father finally agreed to let him become a professional artist.
Corot traveled to Italy several times to study Renaissance art. He worked in the styles of both the realists and the romantics of his time, but his art has been described as more individual than that of his colleagues.
Historians have divided Corot's work into periods, but there is no clear dividing point. In his early period he painted in a traditional and precise manner, while after his fiftieth year his methods changed towards a breadth of tone and an approach to poetic power.
In addition to landscapes, which were his favorite genre, Corot also produced some highly regarded portraits of people. His works are spread across France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the United States. Corot died in Paris on 22 February 1875.
