George Pan Cosmatos (1941 - 2005) was a skilled director and screenwriter of international mainstream and Hollywood genre films, of Italian-Greek origin. After his first successes in his home country with dramatic films such as “Massacre in Rome” (1973, based on the real Ardeatine massacre) with Richard Burton and Marcello Mastroianni in the roles of a Nazi colonel and a priest respectively. He began his career in entertainment working with a leading figure in international cinema, as an assistant director on Otto Preminger's epic “Exodus” (1960). Then Cosmatos retooled his career toward mainstream "blockbuster" action-adventure films, including “The Cassandra Crossing” and “Escape to Athena,” both Italian-British co-productions. After moving to North America, he directed the film horror “Of Unknown Origin". This was followed by some of his best-known works, including the action films Rambo: First Blood Part II and Cobra (both starring Sylvester Stallone), the science fiction horror film Leviathan, and the acclaimed Western Tombstone.
