John Sell Cotman, born in Norwich on 16 May 1782 and died on 24 July 1842, was an English painter, engraver, illustrator specializing in seascapes and landscapes, as well as an important member of the Norwich School of painting.
Cotman studied at Norwich Grammar School but from a young age showed a talent for art and decided to pursue an artistic career. In 1798, he moved to London, where he met other artists such as William Turner, Peter de Wint and Thomas Girtin, whose drawing club he later joined and with whom he traveled to Wales and Surrey. Cotman studied at Norwich Grammar School but from a young age showed a talent for art and decided to pursue an artistic career. In 1798, he moved to London, where he met other artists such as William Turner, Peter de Wint and Thomas Girtin, whose drawing club he later joined and with whom he traveled to Wales and Surrey. In 1800, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, showing scenes of the Welsh countryside in 1801 and 1802. His drawing expeditions took him throughout southern Britain and Yorkshire.
John Sell Cotman died in London on 24 July 1842.
