Michael Coudenhove-Kalergi (1937 - ) was born in Prague in 1937. Since 1945 the family lived in Vienna. The young man studied between 1952 and 1958 at the Graz school of arts and crafts under Rudolf Szyszkowitz and subsequently until 1964 at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. During his studies Coudenhove met the Viennese artists of "magical realism" and regularly participated in their group exhibitions. His playful and extremely graphic style was dominated by a fairy-tale manneristic alienation. Formally oriented towards the Austrian Baroque, the dream worlds of Alfred Kubin and the poetry of dazzling decadence of Fritz von Herzmanovsky-Orlando, the artist created mainly fantastic views. Oil paintings, watercolors, brush and ink drawings, and etchings of European city views, historic architecture, and landscapes. They were populated by insects, fish, birds and mythical creatures or combined with trains and historic cars. In Coudenhove's work the interest in topographical details and the pleasure of telling the psychologizing element always dominated and the humor, farce and fascination of the morbid were in the foreground. Today Michael Coudenhove-Kalergi lives mainly in Japan.
