Alberto Cuyp Biography
Albert Cuyp was a Dutch painter, born on 20 October 1620 in Dordrecht and died on 15 November 1691. His work included landscapes, seascapes, animals, still lifes and portraits. He was the only son of the painter Jacob Gerritz Cuyp, who initiated him into pictorial studies. Subsequently, Cuyp worked as a brewer to earn a living. He made his first paintings in the late 1630s. In 1642 he visited the north of the country for the first time, passing through cities such as Rhenen, Arnhem, Amersfoort, Utrecht, Leiden and The Hague. These stays influenced his work, especially in landscapes, in views of roads with travelers and animals, rivers and seas crossed by ships. Although he was known in his day as a portraitist, today he is more famous as a landscape and animal painter.
Albert Cuyp died in November 1691.
