Michael Dahl was a famous Swedish portrait painter born in Stockholm in 1659 and died in London in 1743. Michael Dahl was a famous Swedish portrait painter born in Stockholm in 1659 and died in London in 1743. He spent most of his career in England, painting portraits of numerous aristocrats and members of royal families, including Queen Anne of Great Britain , Prince George of Denmark and Queen Christina of Sweden in exile. His first art lessons were given in 1674 by the Hungarian drawing master Martin Hannibal and the famous Swedish painter David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl. In 1682 he obtained a passport to travel throughout Europe for study, reaching London, Paris, Venice and Rome. Here, he had the opportunity to meet the Swedish Queen Christina, who had abdicated to convert to Roman Catholicism. Cristina showed her works to Pope Innocent XI, who awarded her a gold medal. In March 1689, Dahl returned to London, where his fame continued to grow, until his death in 1743.
