Gunter Damisch attended the musical high school in Linz and then studied medicine. After attending the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg with Claus Pack, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Arnulf Rainer. In 1992 he held a course in graphic arts at the Vienna Academy and later held the role of full professor.
His belonging to the "New Savages" group combines his style in a painting that prefers emphatic gestures and highly expressive tones that highlight the spirit of the time.
The apparently free and aggressive works become spokesmen of a profound meaning: the tragic sense of humanity and history, in order to redeem the German people and their artists from the weight of the tragedy experienced during the Second World War.
Gunter Damisch passed away in 2016.
