Andrea D'arienzo Biography

Andrea D'Arienzo was born in Vietri in 1911. After finishing school, he became a decorator pupil of the Salerno painter Giuseppe Avallone and his son Pasquale, also dealing with the production of commonly used ceramics at various Vietri factories including Max's "ICS" Melamerson. Subsequently he dedicated himself to the decoration of ceilings as an employee of some specialized companies.
In 1944, together with his childhood friend Guido Gambone, Andrea founded the factory for the production of artistic majolica "La Faenzarella", where he also built a wood-fired oven. While managing the factory, Andrea began to deal with enamels, quickly becoming an expert. In the following years, the "D'Arienzo" factory opened for the production of artistic majolica, in a modern and traditional Vietri style, based in Corso Umberto 60 in Vietri sul Mare.
In 1950, for Christmas, Andrea left the small factory in Vietri and moved to Florence where he worked, until 1967, at Guido Gambone's "La Tirrena" laboratory. Subsequently, he returned to Vietri where he continued to dedicate himself to artistic ceramics, creating works inspired by a primitivism with distinctly Vietri flavours.
Andrea D'arienzo died in his hometown in 1995.
