Charles (Corneille Auguste) de Groux, born on 25 August 1825 in Comines and died on 30 March 1870 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, was a Belgian painter, illustrator and engraver.
He received his first painting lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels between 1838 and 1850, under the guidance of the neoclassical painter François-Joseph Navez and Jean-Baptiste Van Eycken, who specialized in historical paintings. He mainly dealt with genre subjects, preferring those that concerned the lives of the poor and the dispossessed, with a realism that has humanitarian aspects. Read the full biography

Charles De Groux Biography

Charles (Corneille Auguste) de Groux, born on 25 August 1825 in Comines and died on 30 March 1870 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, was a Belgian painter, illustrator and engraver.
He received his first painting lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels between 1838 and 1850, under the guidance of the neoclassical painter François-Joseph Navez and Jean-Baptiste Van Eycken, who specialized in historical paintings. He mainly dealt with genre subjects, preferring those that concerned the lives of the poor and the dispossessed, with a realism that has humanitarian aspects. In 1848 he exhibited his works for the first time at the Brussels Salon.
De Groux continued to study at the Düsseldorf Academy, where he was inspired by the Flemish primitives, becoming interested in the experiences of the anti-academic artistic movement called "Tendenzmalerei".
De Groux died on 30 March 1870 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
