Adolfo De Karolis Biography
Adolfo De Karolis, born on 6 January 1874 in Montefiore dell'Aso, was a well-known Italian painter, restorer, decorator, engraver, illustrator, xylographer and photographer. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he moved to Rome in 1892 to study at the school of pictorial decoration of the Industrial Art Museum, developing his skills in the field of decorative art. De Karolis became friends with the members of the art club "In arte libertas", which gathered around Nino Costa. A skilled engraver, he created the graphic decorations for publications by Giovanni Pascoli and Gabriele D'Annunzio. He also dedicated himself to tempera painting, depicting the Roman countryside. Decorative art being the essence of his style, he dealt with the decoration of various buildings, such as those of the Provincial Palace of Ascoli Piceno and Arezzo and the ornamentation of the Aule Magne of the University of Pisa. Adolfo De Karolis died in Rome on 7 February 1928, leaving behind an important artistic legacy.
