Willem De Kooning Biography

Willem de Kooning was born on April 24, 1904 in Rotterdam and died on Long Island in the United States in 1997.
He was one of the leading figures of post-World War II American art. Together with Pollok he will be part of the movement of Abstract Expressionism and the so-called New York School.
His first training took place at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam. In 1926 he went to the United States and settled in New York the following year. Here he met John Graham, Stuart Davis and Arshile Gorky. The works of the 1930s show a notable affinity with those of his friends and reflect the impact of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró on these young artists.
In 1938 he began the first series of his women, which would become a recurring theme.
In the 1940s, he exhibited in group exhibitions with other artists of the New York School. The solo exhibition at the Egan Gallery in New York in 1948 established him as a leading artist.
In 1968, he returned to Holland for the first time in forty years for a retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1969 in Rome, he created his first sculptures, figures modeled in clay and then cast in bronze. In the early 1970s he began a series of life-size figures.
De Kooning's works are exhibited in the major contemporary art museums, being one of the most appreciated and highly regarded artists on the contemporary art scene. Until 2015, his painting “Interchange” held the record for the most expensive work of art sold, with a value of 300 million dollars.
