Jean Pierre De Marchi Biography
Jeanne Pierre De Marchi (1928 - 1979) was born in Algeria in 1928 and died in 1979. He was a French sculptor and medalist. For his creations he is inspired by nature and recomposes it to the limit of the abstract. He is also recognized for the medals he produces in collaboration with the Monnaie de Paris (the National Monetary Institution of France). Parallel to his work as an independent artist, he is the artistic director of the Daum crystal factory. In this context he developed the creation of glass paste sculptures and created collections of everyday objects. He was born to Italian-Swiss parents and soon settled in France where, in 1948, he enrolled at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris. Friend and classmate of Maurice Legendre, he was a pupil of Robert Couturier (1905-2008), director of the sculpture workshop. The latter offered him a collaboration in 1952 as soon as he left the École. When in 1967 the Daum glassworks offered him the position of artistic director, which he accepted while maintaining his activity as an independent sculptor, it was he who created sculptures in glass paste and promoted collaborations with various famous artists including Salvador Dalí, César, Couturier, Legendre, Lhoste, Badord, Gérard Koch or Pierre Dmitrienko.
