Francesco De Matteis, born in Lecce in 1852, moved to Naples to study at the Institute of Fine Arts, where he excelled in sculpture. He became one of the protagonists of the Neapolitan artistic scene, decorating famous places such as the Gran Caffè Gambrinus and the Teatro Mercadante. He returned to Lecce to decorate Palazzo Carrozzini and Palazzo Garzya and created the monument to Gioacchino Toma. Invited to numerous exhibitions, he was appointed Honorary Professor at the Institutes of Fine Arts in Urbino and Naples. He passed away in Naples in 1917, but his talent and works are still appreciated and sought after by Italian collectors.
