Jan de Momper, probably born in Antwerp on 16 August 1614 or 1617, was a Flemish landscape painter. The artist fell into oblivion until his rediscovery in 1959. Thanks to his expressionist technique, executed with a fast and free brush, Jan de Momper occupies a unique position in the artistic panorama of Baroque Rome.
The de Momper family was a family of landscape painters and engravers from Bruges, in fact, some experts believe that Joannes de Momper was the son of the painter Jan de Momper II. In 1657, the artist moved to Rome to create nine landscapes for the Doria Pamphilj family, an important Roman family. Jan de Momper is said to have joined the Bentvueghels, an organization of Flemish and Dutch painters active in Rome. In 1684, Jan de Momper was recorded as attaching to the Chigi palace in Ariccia. He probably died in 1684 or 1704.
