Brian De Palma (1940 - ) is an American director and writer. In a career spanning over 40 years, he is probably best known for his thriller and suspense films, including box office hits such as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible. Originally majoring in physics at Columbia University before turning his attention to film, he made his debut film, the 1960 short Icarus, while at Columbia. He was fired by Warner Bros during the production of his first studio film, the offbeat 1972 comedy Know Your Rabbit. He undoubtedly rose to fame with his 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's novel Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek. Often compared to Alfred Hitchcock due to the similarities between Hitchcock's films and De Palma's thrillers such as Sisters (1973) and Dressed to Kill (1980).
