Giuseppe De Sanctis Biography

Giuseppe De Sanctis (Naples, 21 June 1858 – Naples, 18 June 1924) was an Italian painter. He was born in Naples in 1858 and embarked on an artistic career with the encouragement of his father Cesare, a businessman who loved the arts and music and was a friend of Giuseppe Verdi. He enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples and was a pupil of Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi and Gioacchino Toma. With one of his works "The Evening Prayer in Byzantium" (which was purchased by King Umberto I) he won the silver medal at the Palermo Exhibition at the end of the 1880s. He also worked abroad, in London and especially in Paris, where he was a pupil of Gèrome and Bouveret and, like other great Italian artists of the time, painted for the merchant Goupil. With his Parisian experience his painting became more delicate and elegant, especially in the beautiful female portraits painted between the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s. He participated in the Neapolitan Promoters from 1882 to 1917. He was an honorary professor of the Academies of Fine Arts of Naples and Urbino and taught engraving and etching at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts of Naples. His painting "Woman among the hydrangeas" is located in the Pinacoteca di Capodimonte.
