Peter De Wint Biography

Peter de Wint was a well-known English artist, born on 21 January 1784 in Stone, Staffordshire. After moving to London in 1802, Peter began his apprenticeship as an engraver to John Raphael Smith, but in 1806 he interrupted this activity to devote himself to watercolor painting, inspired by the works of Turner and Girtin.
In 1810, De Wint was accepted as an associate member of the Old Water-Colour Society, soon becoming very famous and appreciated for his search for artistic truth and his sober palette, consisting of only ten pigments. The use of these colors on ivory Creswick paper achieved a unique level of refinement and elegance, so much so that it won over many patrons and art collectors of the time. Most of his works are preserved in important London museums such as the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Lincoln Museum.
Peter de Wint died in London on 30 January 1849.
