Saverio Xavier Della Gatta Biography

Saverio della Gatta (Lecce, 8 September 1758 – ..., shortly after 1828) was an Italian painter, known in particular for landscapes and views of Naples and its surroundings. Saverio della Gatta, sometimes signed Xavier in his paintings, was a Neapolitan painter active between the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century. He portrayed landscapes and views in watercolors and gouache with typical aspects of Neapolitan life at the time. There is little information on della Gatta's life. It is documented that he was a pupil of Jacopo Cestaro in 1777 at the drawing academy in Naples. His first documented work is a view of Vesuvius dated 1779. At the request of the king of Naples he was commissioned in December 1782 to travel to the kingdom to take portraits of the costumes of the various provinces to be reproduced in a porcelain service from the Royal Factory of Naples. However, he was replaced by A. Berotti. A watercolor from 1794 documents his stay in Rome. There are no documented works dated after 1828.
