Cesare Augusto Detti Biography

He was born in Spoleto to Davide and Annunziata Vannini on 28 November. 1847. In 1862 he moved to Rome and enrolled at the Accademia di S. Luca, where he was a pupil of Francesco Podesti and graduated in 1865. In 1872 he exhibited in Naples and the following year in Rome (Pavoni, 23 March 1941): in 1872 his paintings attracted the attention of the French merchant A. Goupil, who invited him to Paris (Thieme-Becker), where D. went in '76 and where he settled in 1880. Starting from 1876 he participated in numerous official Parisian exhibitions. In '78 he exhibited La rissa at the Salon; in '79 in the foreign schools section of the Universal Exposition Una festa. Member of the Association of Watercolorists of Rome since 1881 (Lomonaco, 1987), in the same year he participated in the Salon de la Societé des artistes français. In 1888 he participated in the Italian Exhibition in London; and the following year he was appointed vice-president of the Italian committee of the Universal Exhibition in Paris and one of his paintings was awarded the bronze medal; from 1891 he exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts. In 1900 he presented L'Aurora at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, a ceiling canvas, intended for the home of a collector in New York (Thieme-Becker), awarded the silver medal; in 1902 (?) at the Exhibition. ital. of Petersburg he exhibited Costumes under Louis XVI (Edouard-Joseph), in 1910 at the Salon La défense du drapeau, which met with widespread public success (ibid.). He died in Paris on 19 May 1914.
