Juraj Dobrovic Biography

Juraj Dobrovìc (1928 - ) was born in 1928 in Jelsa. He finished school in Jelsa, Bol and Split. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics and History of Art at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. He was one of the Croatian representatives of op art. In the 1960s he appeared on the Croatian art scene. He has exhibited independently in Croatia and the rest of the world since 1962, and has been in group exhibitions since 1963. At that time, Zagreb became one of the leading centers of contemporary art thanks to the international New Tendency movement. It remains faithful to the most traditional materials and the simplicity of white. In 1972 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in the parallel exhibition Graphic Art Today, and with him Miroslav Šutej, Ivan Picelj, Edo Murtić and Virgilije Nevjestić exhibited. He also exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial in 1973. He participated in exhibitions with famous artists whose poetics and visual syntax were based on geometric language. He is an artist who showed a rare systematicity of work, with his research in the field of visual and plastic design, but at the same time he was also a true metaphysician for his extreme will in the purity of his work.
