Louis Dorigny Biography

Louis Dorigny, born in Paris in 1654, studied at the school of Charles Le Brun in Paris, and later made the traditional grand tour of Italy. In Venice, he created his first pictorial works, gaining the favor and protection of several Venetian aristocrats.
In Verona, Dorigny introduced a series of innovations in the field of fresco painting: compared to Veronese, the French painter used a more dramatic and often celebratory style of the scene, with particular attention to the decoration. The painter's representations are characterized by a massive solidity that leaves no room for perspective breakthroughs. Dorigny remained anchored to an architectural and academic elegance, with few illusionistic accents and a lot of formal rigor, inherited from Le Brun. Dorigny died on 19 October 1742, in Verona.
