Jules Dupré (Nantes, 5 April 1811 – L'Isle-Adam, 6 October 1889) was a French painter, he was one of the leading members of the Barbizon school of landscape painters. Jules Dupré, who was the son of a porcelain maker, made his first experiences as a painter, decorating his father's porcelain. He first exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1831 and three years later received a second class medal. He became a friend of the painter Théodore Rousseau and went with him to Barbizon, to paint landscapes en plein air. In 1834 he went to England, where he was deeply impressed by the genius of John Constable and the lustrous, nuanced landscapes of William Turner. He preferred strong color contrasts, so he loved to paint in the twilight hours when the light mixes with the mists and vapors of the earth.
