Richard Evergon is an artist born under the name Albert Jay Lunt in 1946 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He attended Mount Allison University and graduated with a master of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1974. Evergon has explored the medium of photography and photo collage as an art form throughout his career, focusing on topics such as sexuality, gender construction, aging and body image. In his work, he often used art historical references and sought to question the validity of accepted artistic tradition. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Evergon was associated with a group of artists who reacted against the conventions of post-war photography, and he presented more than a thousand exhibitions in Canada and internationally. He has more than 250 works in public collections across Canada. Evergon has been recognized by the Canada Council and Petro-Canada for its work. Currently, he lives and works in Montreal and teaches at Concordia University.
