Ezio Pirali Biography

Ezio Pirali (1921 - ) born in 1921, was an Italian industrial designer. Graduated in electromechanics from Freiburg, he was CEO of Zerowatt, an Italian household appliance company, where he invented and developed a variety of products, including versions of table fans under the same brand. The sheer ingenuity of post-war Italian design, a quality developed out of necessity and which contributed significantly to this nation's economic recovery, is reflected in Pirali's work. Produced by the Fabbriche Elettrotecniche Riunite, it was the VE505 fan, created in 1953, that won the Compasso d'Oro in 1954. The inventive ingenuity, the innovative criteria in the use of material, the shape of the motor hood, the functional solutions made this piece a typical example of an aesthetic result directly deriving from a technical approach. The designer had in fact designed the support made up of two crossed and articulated metal circles based on the spherical shape which almost perfectly circumscribes the fundamental shape of every small induction motor.
