Luigi Fabris Biography

Luigi Fabris, sculptor and ceramist, was born on 23 August 1883 in Bassano del Grappa.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice under the guidance of Antonio Dal Zotto. After working as a modeler at "Passarin", in 1911 he began his career as a ceramist entrepreneur by taking over the ancient Bassano factory where he was employed. In his factory Luigi Fabris creates porcelain statuettes representing knights and ladies in eighteenth-century dresses. These works are of great quality and the ceramist soon becomes famous on the market. In 1917, following the defeat of Caporetto and the sale of "Passarin" to "Agostinelli & dal Prà", Luigi Fabris found himself a refugee in Milan where he opened a new ceramic factory called "Fabris Ceramiche". His porcelain works achieved growing success both in Italy and abroad. In the 1920s Fabris was elected Head of the Lombardy Ceramics Community and appointed Member of the Fascist Experimental Institute of Ceramics. In 1929 his porcelain production was presented at the Leipzig Fair, achieving important commercial success. In 1942 the Milanese factory was completely destroyed by a bombing. After the war, Luigi Fabris returns to his hometown to rebuild his manufacturing business.
He died in his hometown in 1952, leaving the artistic legacy to his son Augusto who ran it until 1979, when he sold it to the Elite company which also acquired the rights to reproduce the historical pieces.
