Gennaro Favai Biography

Gennaro Favai, Venetian painter born in 1879, began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice at the age of twenty-one. However, preferring a less rigorous education, he decided to continue his studies privately. He attended the studio of the master Vettore Zanetti Zilla, where he studied Venetian painting from the 16th to the 18th century, and subsequently the studio of Mario De Maria, where he learned the technique of creating a dreamlike and romantic interpretation of the lagoon landscape. Thanks to his expressive and chromatic ability, Favai managed to create an image of a crumbling Venice, but enriched by the indelible signs of time and enhanced by suggestive plays of light.
From 1906 to 1915, Favai lived in Paris, where he met and associated with important artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Mondrian and Dufy. Despite this, he did not suffer any influence from the Parisian avant-garde. Only after meeting Felix Ziem did he decide to give his paintings an impressionist approach, replacing his previous use of dark tones with a "light manner" that he maintained throughout his painting career.
