Fede Cheti Biography
Federica Cheti was born in Savona in 1905 and studied in France. After his father's death in the 1930s, he moved to Milan with his mother. Here, using an artisanal loom, he began to weave the first carpets and fabrics for a small circle of customers. Subsequently, she purchased sketches from various artists, becoming their owner and only affixing the Fede Cheti brand. In 1936, in Milan, he founded the Fede Cheti School of carpets and weaving. In those years, he met Giò Ponti, a meeting destined to turn into a lasting friendship. Fede Cheti's creations stand out for the originality of the designs (among which his taste for large flowers stands out), elegance and functionality. Her presence, together with her creations, extends beyond the textile field, intertwining with architecture and design and making her a leading figure in the post-war cultural and intellectual panorama. In 1948, the Fede Cheti company participated in the prestigious "Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today" exhibition in New York. In 1950, her artistic fabrics were awarded the gold medal at the Venice Biennale, and in February 1960, in London, Fede Cheti was the only woman and the only Italian to participate in the celebrations for the centenary of the department stores Sanderson, the leading English house for furnishing fabrics. He collaborates with important Italian artists, including Giorgio de Chirico, Fausto Melotti, Massimo Campigli, Renato Guttuso, Filippo de Pisis, Raoul Dufy, Raymond Peynet, Mario Sironi and Giò Ponti. Federica died in Genoa on November 18, 1978. After her death, the Fede Cheti company was acquired and is still active today.
