Lyonel Feininger Biography

Lyonel Feininger (born in New York in 1871) was an American painter and printmaker.
He was the son of musicians and also passionate about music. In 1887 he went to Europe to complete his education. He dedicated himself entirely to the world of art, studying in Hamburg, Berlin and then Paris.
Initially, he worked as a cartoonist and caricaturist for several German and French newspapers, such as the "Ulk", "Lustige Blätter", the "Le Témoin" in Paris and the "Chicago Sunday Tribune" in the United States. From 1909, he came into contact with Robert Delaunay, with Cubism and German Expressionism. His paintings (especially cityscapes and seascapes) were characterized by prismatic shapes and a cold color range.
He was called by Walter Gropius to teach at the Bauhaus, where he supervised the printmaking workshop. With Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Alexej von Jawlensky he founded the artistic group "Die Blaue Vier" in 1924. Considered by the artists of the Nazi regime as a degenerate artist, he returned permanently to the United States in 1937. Here he painted murals for the Universal Exhibition of New York in 1939 and portrayed some characteristic scenes of Manhattan, including his most famous works. He passed away in New York in 1956.
