Giuseppe Felici Biography

Giuseppe Felici (1839 - 1923) He is known for having been the official photographer of numerous Vatican events. The son of a rich landowner, he went to Rome in 1860 to study violin at the Santa Cecilia conservatory and then embark on a musical career. Thus he began to frequent the artistic club in via Margutta where, driven by his curiosity for technology and science, he approached photography. His first subjects were the landscapes of the Roman countryside and his first successes led him to open a studio in via di Ripetta in 1863. In the first years the activity was aimed mainly at tourists with landscape photographs such as stereoscopic views of Rome. Subsequently, his activity became more oriented towards official occasions both as a portraitist and through photographic campaigns. A multifaceted artist, he manages to combine his original interest in music with his activity as a photographer, continuing to compose and devising an innovative photographic system called "Music in Portfolio", which consisted of reducing pages of music to the format of "business cards". . Some interesting examples of this new system are preserved in the State Archives of Rome. In 1892 Felici received the granting of the exclusive right on images relating to the pontiff and his court.
