Naples – 1961 Sergio Fermaniello was born in Naples on 29 April 1961. After his scientific studies and his high school diploma in his city, he attended Natural Sciences courses at the University of Naples. From the age of twenty he decided to dedicate himself exclusively to artistic activity. His research starts from the recovery of models, family memories which then extend to a more in-depth search for universal archai in the recovery of an unconscious collective memory. In 1989 he exhibited for the first time in a solo show at the Galleria Lucio Amelio with which he began a long working collaboration. In the same year he obtained the "Saatchi & Saatchi International Award for young artists" on the occasion of the first edition of the award held at the Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan. He subsequently exhibited in several solo exhibitions including the one at the Galleria Il Capricorno in Venice in 1990 and at the Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris in 1992. He is also present in some important international events such as the Metropolis exhibition at the International Kunstausstellung in Berlin in 1991 and the shows Les pictographes at the Musée de l'Abbaye Sainte-Croix in Les Sables-d'olonne where Didier Ottinger invites him to exhibit his works alongside paintings by Klee, Miró, Picasso, Penck, Sanejouand. In 1993, at just 32 years old, he was called by Achille Bonito Oliva to participate in the For the occasion he presents two large works made up of three panels in which he develops the essential figuration of the Warriors, a motif that has run through the artist's entire research since '89. In 1995 he exhibited some three-dimensional works in the Opus Alchemico exhibition at the Galleria In Arco in Turin, halfway between painting and sculpture which constitute a further stage in the artist's young career.
