Agostino Ferrari was born in Milan on 9 November 1938. Attracted by the world of art since childhood, after completing scientific studies, he began working as a painter in 1959, the year in which he met Remo Brindisi, who immediately welcomed him to work in his studio. In 1961 his first solo exhibition was inaugurated at the Pater gallery in Milan, with the presentation by Giorgio Kaisserlian. The works of the early years, which Ferrari groups together with the terms Surrounding Nature, have as their object the landscape of the industrial outskirts of Milan at the end of the 1950s and, although they are aniconic paintings which are still affected by the presence of a certain Informal, they express a strong naturalistic influence. In 2005, Ferrari was invited to the Rome Quadrennial, within the Contemporary Art section, on which occasion he created a large work (1.60 x 3.60 m) belonging to the Oltre la threshold series, canvases whose characterizing element is a suggestive dark gap in the central part, an absolute black which in the artist's intentions represents "everything that lies beyond the temporal coincidence of man before birth and after death (...) the limitation of our thought compared to that infinitely large which is everything we don't know".
