Luca Ferrari, also called Luca da Reggio, was born in Reggio Emilia in 1605. According to sources, he was a pupil of Guido Reni, but the earliest surviving works show no influence of the master. Thanks to his knowledge of 16th-century Venetian painting, he was able to tone down Emilian naturalism and adopt softer, brighter colors. Furthermore, between 1639 and 1643, during his stay in Padua, he had the opportunity to meet Paolo Veronese and create an important cycle with the Stories of Antenor. He specialized in the execution of large canvases depicting historical and mythological subjects.
Ferrari died in Padua on 12 February 1654.
