Branko Filipovic Biography

Branko Filipović (Cetinje, 1924 – Belgrade, 1997) graduated from the Herceg Novi Art School in 1950 and subsequently from the Belgrade Academy of Fine Arts in 1955.
The artist was one of the protagonists of Belgrade Informal Art but was separated from the rest of the members of this movement due to the conditions of his training and the characteristics of his visual language. Under the influence of fresh painting, in 1954, he made many experiments with various materials on paper and small canvas which he exhibited for the first time in 1957. In the 70s and 80s there is a notable change in the paintings by Filipovic: addresses a "pure painting" characterized by the introduction of color and the use of two-dimensional space as a key vector of pictorial expression.
He held his first solo exhibition in 1951 in Cetinje. Furthermore, he has presented exhibitions in Belgrade, Rome, Paris and Vienna. He had retrospectives at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, the Modern Gallery in Ljubljana, the coastal galleries in Piran and the Forum Gallery in Nikšić in 1987 and finally in the National Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje in 1997. He also exhibited at the Biennial of Venice in 1990.
