Sebastiano Filippi was born in Ferrara around 1532 and began working for the oratory of the Confraternity of Death, where he created a banner that has now disappeared. In addition to this, he created numerous altarpieces for city and suburban churches. During a trip to Venice, his style evolved towards anti-classical positions. In 1577 he undertook alone the creation of the Last Judgment in the Cathedral of Ferrara, inspired by that of Michelangelo but with a personal style that emphasized the ombre technique. Filippi died in Ferrara on 23 August 1602.
