Spencer Finch Biography

Spencer Finch was born in New Haven. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, Hamilton College and Doshisha University in Kyoto. Additionally, he has exhibited widely in the United States and around the world since the early 1990s.
Spencer Finch is best known for his ethereal light installations. His research on the nature of light is manifested through watercolours, drawings, videos and photographs. Moved by what he describes as "the impossible desire to see oneself", Finch stages an enchanting prism between the external world and internal thought. He distills his observations of the world into bright abstract colors but also directs them through cultural and historical filters: In homage to Emily Dickinson's 1862 poem “Before I got my eye put out,” he measured the sunlight in his Massachusetts garden and then recreated the effect of a cloud passing through gel-coated fluorescent tubes and suspended filters. He painted the different shades of gray on Sigmund Freud's ceiling in Vienna, Austria, seen from the psychoanalyst's chair and later, in “102 Colors from My Dreams” (2002) he recorded the colors he saw in his sleep, then compared the inks to create a series of Rorschach blots. His monumental installation “Trying To Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning” (2014), exhibited at the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York features a mosaic of hand-painted shades of blue.
Today, the artist lives and works in Brooklyn.
