Joel Fisher (1947 - ) lives and works on the coast of north-east England and northern Vermont. He has lived in New York, London, Paris and Berlin. He studied at Kenyon College in Ohio and earned a PhD from Sunderland University. He has received a number of prestigious awards including a Watson Traveling Fellowship, a DAAD Berlin Stipendium, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Howard Foundation Grant and many others. Many of Fisher's sculptures come from a reactive drawing he calls Apograph, in which a fragile configuration is copied onto the paper on which it was found. When this shape is chosen as inspiration for a sculpture, this empty graphic symbol begins its transition towards permanence and weight. A sculpture is born when the once fragile form takes residence and adapts. The form must wear clothes appropriate to that new context. Fisher's work is part of several public collections, including the Kunstmuseum Bern; Kunstmuseum Lucerne; The Malmo Museum; Center Georges Pompidou, Paris; Stadisches Museum, Mönchengladbach; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Tate Gallery, London and Museum of Modern Art, New York.
