Hippolyte Flandrin, born on 23 March 1809 in the city of Lyon, demonstrated a great talent for painting from a young age and was soon noticed by the famous artist Ingres, who became his mentor and introduced him to the prestigious School of Lyon.
In 1832 he won the Prix de Rome, a scholarship that allowed him to spend two years in the capital.
Returning to France, he settled in Paris, where he began to devote himself to historical and religious painting, but he was also an excellent portraitist, following the example of his teacher Ingres. His neoclassical style allowed him to develop a personal style, characterized by rigorous attention to form and classical beauty.
In 1853, he was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, testifying to the great prestige he had achieved in the art world.
