Govaert Flinck was born on January 25, 1615 in Kleve, Germany. His father was a merchant who introduced him to the fabric trade. Despite his work, Flinck never abandoned his passion for drawing.
He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he decided to become a painter and train under Rembrandt. His skill in copying the master's works was such that many of his works were mistaken for authentic Rembrandt paintings.
When Rembrandt left the city, Flinck took over in his place in late 1635 or early 1636. His fame continued to grow, having many wealthy clients. During a trip to Antwerp, he studied the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Antoon van Dyck, which had a strong influence on his style.
Flinck received numerous commissions for portraits of important families, and his reputation spread far beyond Amsterdam.
He died on February 2, 1660.
