Dario Fo Biography
Dario Luigi Angelo Fo (Sangiano, 24 March 1926 – Milan, 13 October 2016) was an Italian playwright, actor, director, writer, author, illustrator, painter, set designer and activist. Famous for his theatrical texts of political and social satire and for his left-wing political commitment, with his wife Franca Rame he was among the exponents of the Soccorso Rosso Militante. He was the author of theatrical performances that make use of the comic styles typical of the comedy of Italian art and which are successfully represented throughout the world. As an actor, director, writer, set designer, costume designer and impresario of his own company, Fo was an all-round man of the theater. In 1997 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature with the following motivation: «following the tradition of medieval jesters, he mocks power by restoring dignity to the oppressed.»
