John Foersom Biography
John Foersom (1947 - ) born 1947, trained as a cabinetmaker with Gustav Berthelsen in Copenhagen, completing his apprenticeship in 1969. He then attended Arts and Crafts school in Denmark from 1969, graduating in 1972. He quickly became an understudy and worked part-time at the school of art and design in Denmark. In the 1980s he was hired as a part-time employee at the school furniture company SFB. He formed the duo Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen together with Peter Hiort-Lorenzen. The two have been running their own design studio since the late 1970s and are today considered "the great old men" of Danish furniture design. They place great importance on good, solid craftsmanship in combination with a high degree of functionality. In their simple, subdued designs, they find an aesthetic language that is primarily based on functionality and quality. Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen has won several international design awards for, among other things, their innovative approach to material processing and furniture construction, which has proven successful thanks to their practical and academic experience. The playful and dynamic design duo has designed several furniture series for FDB Møbler such as Gesja, Butler and Mikado, Mikado as a reinterpretation of Poul M. Volther's iconic J46 chair. Furthermore, their furniture is on permanent display at MoMA in New York, Designmuseum Denmark, Trapholt in Kolding, Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.
