Jean Louis Forain was a French painter and draftsman. Born in Reims in 1852 and died in Paris in 1931, he developed his art inspired by the works of H. Daumier and F. Goya. Thanks to his incisive style, he created numerous illustrations and caricatures for various Parisian newspapers, including “La cravache”, “Monde parisien”, “Journal amusant” and “Le rire”. During the Dreyfus affair, he began a collaboration with Caran d'Ache to found the newspaper Pss't in 1898-99, and published a series of patriotic and conservative drawings in Le Figaro until 1920.
Jeanniot collected many of his drawings in volumes such as “La Comédie parisienne” (1892), “Les temps difficiles” (1893), “Doux pays” (1897) and “De la Marne au Rhin” (1921), which collects the sketches sent from the front to Le Figaro. He also executed some etchings with sacred subjects. In the last years of his career, Jeanniot returned to painting, particularly portraiture.
