Agostino Fossati Biography

Agostino Fossati (1830 - 1904) was a painter from La Spezia, one of the most important Ligurian artists of the 19th century and the best landscape painter of the 19th century in La Spezia. He attended the Scuola di Ornato and taught there from 1853 throughout his life, becoming a mentor to Giuseppe Pontremoli.
His art is inspired by Ligurian painting, but also by that of numerous English, French and German artists who represented the Gulf and by the Tuscany of the Macchiaioli (he was a friend of Telemaco Signorini). His art is characterized by a constant documentary-reminiscent intent which has made him a precious witness of landscapes and locations that have now disappeared or have changed greatly. Among his clients was Virginia Oldoini.
He painted numerous and evocative views of La Spezia such as "Piazzetta della Colonna di S. Rocco", "Mulino a Vento", "La Foce", "Red Houses after Canaletto", "Ancient provincial road towards the Chiappa", "Porta Romana or of S. Giovanni", "Church of the Madonna della Neve".
In 1922 the Municipality purchased its nucleus of paintings intended for the soon-to-be established municipal art gallery, later created in the Modern and Contemporary Art Center.
