Bob Fosse Biography

Bob Fosse was born in Chicago in 1927 and began his career as a cabaret and striptease dancer in Broadway clubs. He then made his Hollywood debut in the early 1950s and began working in film musical comedies such as "Give a Girl a Break", "The Affairs of Dobie Gillis" and "Kiss Me Kate". In 1954 he collaborated with Jerome Robbins on "Pajama Game" and created one of his most famous sequences, "Steam Heat", which showcased his ability to combine jazz and syncopation with unusual dance movements.
Bob Fosse had a unique choreographic style, characterized by an innovative use of fragmentation and repetition. His dances were often made up of a series of extremely different sequences, which were united by a common movement. Furthermore, he loved working with small groups of dancers and using the simultaneous repetition of different movements. On the one hand the somewhat disjointed aspect of his dances, each made up of a mosaic of apparently unrelated sequences in which a backward somersault or the use of a hat act as intruders in a series of choreographic movements. On the other hand, Fosse's compositions are characterized by small groups of dancers, each of whom works separately, often in opposition to others as in the sequence “Once a Year Day” from Pajama Game.
The film "All That Jazz" is considered his quasi-autobiographical work and highlighted his obsession with death. In 1987 Bob Fosse passed away, leaving behind a unique choreographic legacy and works that continue to inspire dancers and choreographers around the world.
