Giancarlo Francesconi Biography

Francesconi Giancarlo was born in Bologna in 1925. After completing his classical studies he simultaneously attended the Faculty of Medicine and nude courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. He later moved to Milan where he attended evening courses at the Brera Academy. The first important recognition was the I Premio Bianchi, achieved in 1949. In 1953 he won an award at the Biennale del Mare in Rimini. He held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria La Colonna in Milan in 1956. In the same year he participated in the Suzzara Prize. Subsequently he held new solo exhibitions in Milan: in 1957 at the Galleria S. Fedele, in 1958-59 at the Salone Annunciata. He also participates in numerous collective exhibitions and important exhibitions. Initially the artist turned to a post-cubist style of painting; since 1953 he has approached Neorealism. From 1956 to 1958-59 he made the transition in his works from a realist classicism (The Reaper) to an expressionism in which the object increasingly tends to become rarefied (Cardinal, Organism). After 1959, the year in which he decided to suspend his exhibition activity, he abandoned abstraction and recovered figuration in works characterized by an expressionism resolved through symbols or a geometric scheme.
