Josef Frank Biography

Frank Worked with Oskar Strnad and was linked to the Vienna Circle. He initially dealt with residential construction at a time when Vienna was suffering from a crisis of lack of housing solutions, but the minimalism of the style adopted at the time pushed him to found his own company in 1925 for which he began to experiment with less formally rigorous solutions applied , in addition to construction, also in the furniture and fabric design sector.[1] In 1933 he moved to Sweden, where he worked for the Svenskt Tenn design company where, under the guidance of the company's owner, Estrid Ericson, he produced numerous design objects. The collaboration was maintained even after Frank's move to New York, which took place with the aim of escaping from the Nazi and anti-Semitic advance in Europe. Here Frank was also influenced by the collections of local museums: for example, the use of brightly colored botanical patterns for his fabric designs is believed to derive, among others, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After the defeat of Germany, Frank returned to Sweden, where he continued to work for Svenkst Tenn until his death.
