Francis Frith (Chesterfield, 1822 – 1898) was an English photographer, user of the so-called "wet collodion" process. In 1850 he set up a photographic studio known as Frith & Hayward in Liverpool. In 1853 he became a founding member of the Liverpool Photographic Society. After undertaking travels in the Middle East in 1859, he opened the studio of Francis Frith & Co. in Reigate, Surrey, as the world's first photographic publisher. In 1860, after marrying Mary Ann Rosling he began an ambitious project: he began to photograph every town and village in the United Kingdom, in particular, important or interesting historical monuments.
