Eugène Fromentin, born on 24 October 1820 in La Rochelle, was a well-known French painter and writer. His oriental art was the result of the various trips he made to Algeria, while he was engaged in an archaeological mission. During these travels, the writer-painter was able to observe the landscapes and customs of Algeria with great attention, acquiring precious notes that allowed him to give his paintings a realistic accuracy. From his perspective, his works were as valuable to ethnology as they were to art. His travel books were a passionate expression of his exoticism.
His first major success was at the Paris exhibition of 1847, with the famous painting "Gorges de la Chiffa". Fromentin's style was particularly influenced by Eugène Delacroix. His works were distinguished by the surprising use of bright colors and the sagacity of composition. The artist died in his hometown, La Rochelle, on August 27, 1876.
